SFV Indivisible is highlighting the very important race in CA 47 this week. Katie Porter (D)is the current representative for this district. She opted not to run for re-election. Instead, she ran for the Senate seat opened by the death of Diane Feinstein. Her bid ended when she lost in the Primary to Adam Schiff.
The race for this House seat is hotly contested. The Republican National Committee has targeted 37 House seats with open or Democrat incumbents in 2024, including CA 47.
Geography: CA District 47 covers the South Coast Metro area of Orange County. It includes the coastal communities of Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. Irvine, with a 307,600 population, is the largest city in the district.
Demographics: The district is 50% White, 25% Asian, 17% Hispanic and 1.5% Black.
The voter registration is: Democrat 35.4%; Republican 34.61%; and 23.73% No Party Preference.
Background: CA 47 is a swing district The seat has been held by both Republicans and Democrats over the years with recent history trending blue.
Katie Porter won her first election to Congress in 2018 by beating Republican Mimi Walters. Pres. Biden won the district by a slim margin of 1.5 %.
CA 47 is one of most highly educated districts in CA with a median annual household income of $118K. The district includes UC Irvine with its large student population. Katie Porter defeated Scott Baugh (R) n the 2022 House race by 3.44%
The Race: Without popular incumbent Katie Porter on the ticket, this promises to be a hard-fought contest. Dave Min (D) won a bruising Primary race in March and is running against Scott Baugh (R) for the seat in November.
Dave Min is a 48 year old CA State Senator first elected in 2020. His current seat covers over 80% of House District CA 47.
Min is a first generation Korean American. He worked at the Securities and Exchange Commission and was a Law Professor prior to his political career. He has championed gun violence prevention including ending gun shows on public property in Orange County. The campaign lists his top issues as: 1) reproductive freedom for women; 2) gun violence prevention; 3) addressing the climate crisis.
Sixty-two-year-old Scott Baugh(R) was a CA Assemblyman from 1995-2000. He ran unsuccessfully for this U.S. House seat in 2018, and 2022. He is a MAGA republican endorsed by Speaker Mike Johnson and a host of other right-wing legislators.
