The first race toward achieving that goal is the election of a Justice to the Wisconsin Supreme Court on April 1st. Voters will choose between Susan Crawford (D) and Brad Schimel (R) to replace a retiring Democratic Justice. The Wisconsin Supreme Court currently has 4 Democrats and 3 Republicans. A hard-fought race in 2023 won by Janet Protasiewicz shifted the Court majority after 15 years of conservative control. State Supreme Court decisions in those 15 years allowed for severe gerrymandering in both the state legislature and Congressional maps in addition to upholding voter suppression measures. The shift in 2023 to a Democratic Court majority resulted in fairer maps in the state legislature, thereby eliminating the Republican supermajority.
 

Very important decisions are pending before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and will be decided by who is elected in this race. 

They include: 

1. Redrawing Congressional maps

2. Reinstating an 1849 law banning abortions with no exceptions. Maintaining Democratic control is imperative.
 

Wisconsin is a true swing state with close to a 50/50 split in the electorate. 

Yet, the Congressional delegation is 6 Republicans and 2 Democrats. 

If Democrats can hold the court majority, there is a strong likelihood fairer maps will be decided. 

In 2026 Democrats could pick up 2-3 seats in the House of Representatives by simply undoing the gerrymandered maps.
 

Our candidate Susan Crawford, a Dane County Judge, is a former prosecutor, a strong advocate for women’s reproductive rights, and other progressive values. Her opponent is a former Attorney General with extreme views on abortion, and is more likely to support further anti-democracy measures for the state. Billionaires are lined up to support him.
 

This race is our first opportunity on the road to flipping the House next year. We have begun writing postcards, and we will add other actions to support this race as we get closer to Election Day.
